Moving Checklist

With so many things to organise and all kinds of purchases to make before the big day, moving into a new flat is hard work and can be an incredibly stressful process, especially in a city like London. Though it's normal to be rushed off your feet and a bit on edge in the weeks building up to the move, you need not panic. Preparation and planning are the key to a smooth and easy going move and can make all the difference to how moving day goes. This moving checklist will help you keep a tab on what you have done and what still needs to be done, keeping you organised and making the whole moving process a lot easier.

Confirm the move date, and give your landlord plenty of notice if you are currently renting

TV and broadband
There is nothing worse than moving into a new place and realizing that you forgot to sort out a new TV and broadband provider, or notify your existing one that you need everything transferred to a new address. Setting up Internet or a TV package or contract and getting it all up and running can take months, meaning if it isn't arranged in advance, you could be without it for a good few weeks.
Removals
A few months before you are due to move, begin researching removal companies. Read reviews and compare prices to get the best deal, and be sure to book a removals company well in advance. They are often busy and in particularly high demand in London, and by giving them enough notice you can know for sure that they will be available on the day you need to move.

Have a clear out
Moving property is the perfect opportunity to get rid of anything you don't need. You could sell on eBay, put ads in the local paper, hold a car boot or yard sale, or donate unwanted goods to charity. This will save you filling your new flat with unnecessary things and could even raise some money that you can spend on things like decorating.

Redirect your mail
Arrange for your mail to be redirected to your new address, either through the post office or by arrangement with the new tenant

Moving materials
Get hold of adequate moving materials, such as sturdy and sizable cardboard boxes  a few weeks in advance

Fixtures and fittings
Obtain measurements for any fittings that need doing, like carpets, blinds or curtains, as this can be time consuming and they are often made to size

Updating your contact details

1) Tell your bank you are moving, and update your address with them, especially if you receive your monthly statements in the mail.
2) Inform relatives, friends and any workmates that you are due to move and let them know relevant details, including your new address.
3) If you have any subscriptions to magazines or services, be sure that you have updated your delivery address with the company so you don't lose out
4) Notify all of your utility providers that you will be moving property, and update your contact details.
